CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Carrie felt as though sheâd swallowed a box of cotton balls. She tried to gather enough saliva to lick her lips, but it wasnât working. Remembering where she was, she kept her eyes closed, saying a silent prayer that whatever theyâd done to her had worked. Feeling someone touch her shoulder, she opened her eyes. Oh, God. She was in heaven. Sheâd died. There was an angel above her, an ethereal angel. Her hair was glowing, framing her face in white light. Her eyes were glowing with swirling rings of silver, blue, aquamarine, and some unnamed color.
âDonât look at me like some deity, honey,â smiled Gabi. âI cuss more than the devil himself.â
Carrie let out a slow breath, grinning up at Gabi.
âAm I okay?â she croaked. Gabi grabbed the paper cup beside the bed and bent the straw so that she could take a sip from it. She took three sips, nodding at the other woman, then looked up at her again.
âYouâre going to be just fine,â she smiled. âYour sister and Ryan have been earning their pay at G.R.I.P. They developed a neurostimulator that we were able to insert in the spine. Youâre going to be okay, honey. Dr. Nori said you might even dance again.â
Carrie felt the tears flooding her eyes but didnât have the energy to cry. She let the salty liquid fall down her cheeks, giving Gabi a little nod.
âIâm going to sit you up,â said Gabi. âYouâre going to feel a little discomfort, but it shouldnât be painful. If it is, tell me immediately, and weâll lie you back down.â
Carrie nodded again as Gabi slowly moved the electronic bed into place. She felt an intense burning at her lower spine but no real pain to speak of. But the burning had to be good. It was something she didnât feel before.
Finally sitting up, she looked down at her legs, perhaps thinking they would look different in some way. They still looked like her legs. Long and slender but with muscles.
âCan you wiggle your toes?â asked Gabi.
Carrie stared at her feet, trying to wiggle her toes.
âDonât think about it,â said Gabi. âJust stretch your feet as if you were dancing. Naturally.â
She nodded, closed her eyes, and stretched her toes downward just as she would do at the beginning of any training or rehearsal. Opening her eyes, she saw that her toes were pointed straight out, and she smiled.
âGood,â smiled Gabi. âNow, with your eyes open. Do it again.â
Carrie did it again, her toes flexing up, then down. Slowly she rotated her ankles, then dared to attempt to bend her knees. It was uncomfortable but not horribly painful. Both legs finally bent, she stared at Gabi, shaking her head.
âYou did this,â she cried. âYou made it so I could walk again.â
âNo, baby, your sister and Ryan did this. I was just the knife wielder,â she said with a wink. âNow, thereâs a man thatâs been waiting out there for hours to see you. What do you say I go and get him?â
âI think Iâd like that,â said Carrie.
